My neighbor's house caught fire on Friday.  Something in the garage - perhaps the water heater or furnace - started things burning.  A few minutes later, there was an explosion that we think was the gas tank of an old car parked inside the garage.  Five fire engines arrived on the scene along with a few other emergency vehicles.  There were huge flames shooting out of the garage and a 50 foot high column of black smoke.  I didn't get out there with the camera until they had it under control.

I live in a townhouse, so there is significant danger of fires spreading out of control here.  They managed to put out the fire before it did significant damage to any other units, although the fire was so hot that it melted the house numbers on the unit across the lane (see photo below).

Makes a person realize how vulnerable they are.  Hurray for our local heroes.
